my Current work
My current work includes several pieces inspired by the class I attended in the summer of 2008 at Anderson Ranch Art Center in Snowmass, Colorado with ceramic artist Richard Notkin. The class was entitled "Social and Political Commentary in Sculpture". Earth Altar is a small model of a prehistoric burial site known as a dolmen. This piece is dedicated to the health of our planet Earth with the hopes that we will begin taking care of our environment. Tipping Point, Are We There Yet? is a commentary on climate change. It depicts a stick (axis mundi) balanced in a Chinese Scholar's Rock. The axis mundi is a symbolic connection from the underworld to the heavens, while the Chinese Scholars Rock holds the innate knowledge of our planet, striving toward equilibrium. Emergence and Circle of Life are newer versions of my continuing human potential, human condition theme. I have recently opened my new studio including a slab roller, extruder, potters wheel, and a venting system for both of my kilns. My concentration will continue to focus on positive life-affirming statements in clay. Smaller modular pieces will contribute to the whole piece, in hopes of assisting with easier installation and movement of pieces. |
